Two of the most popular athletes in Artistic Gymnastics, Larissa Iordache of Romania and Giulia Steingruber of Switzerland are officially out of the competition of the 48th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Doha, State of Qatar (October 25th – November 3rd). Both of them underwent surgery and they face the long road of recovery in order to return to competition for next year’s World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany.
After two unsuccessful operations on the Achilles tendon back home, Iordache underwent a third operation in Vienna. The 22 years old two time medalist in the individual all-around event in previous Worlds got injured during the warm-up stage of qualification in the Worlds in Montreal in 2017.
In the meantime, Swiss Steingruber, the Olympic bronze medalist in vault tore her ligaments during training on her floor routine in early July. She is now recuperating at home after a successful surgery on her leg. Both Steingruber and Iordache will have a second opportunity to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan by competing in next year’s Worlds in Stuttgart.
